A detailed specification has been written that describes American Rooftile Coatings’ tile roof restoration process. This method has proven to give superior results. A copy of it can be purchased from American Rooftile Coatings at a nominal fee. A summary of the method can be found by clicking on The Refinishing Process icon.

ARC submitted the detailed specification to the National Tile Roof Manufacturing Association and the Roof Tile Institute for review by their Technical Committees. When approved by NTRMA and RTI, it will be submitted for ICBO review and adoption.

The products described within the specifications are similar to acrylic formulae tested in the 1960’s by a leading acrylic latex manufacturer located in Pennsylvania. Coatings based on 100% acrylic latex polymers and refined grades of titanium or iron oxide pigments were applied to GAF cement-asbestos shingle in 1967. They were evaluated in 1985 and found to have survived without blistering, peeling, checking, cracking or other significant coating failure. Some chalking, with a slight loss of gloss, and fading of the color was observed after 18 years of exterior exposure in a freeze/thaw climate.

The coatings were then gloss top-coated with a clear 100% acrylic polymer, similar to those sold by ARC, and put out for exterior exposure for an additional 20 years in a freeze/thaw climate. The clear gloss topcoat restored the original color and gloss to the finish and the restored appearance was retained after 20 years of additional exterior weathering.

These results indicate that use of a clear gloss topcoat can nearly double the life of a coating. This statement is not meant to suggest that refinishing of concrete roof tile with ARC products will give 38 years of service. But if applied in accordance with ARC’s tile roof restoration method described above, it should perform satisfactorily for ten years. Most coatings exhibit some loss of gloss and color intensity over time and these coatings are no exception.

Material Safety Data Sheets are available upon request for the coating products used for rooftile restoration. Product Specification for the materials is available upon request from the manufacturer. Specs on equipment required for successful rooftile restoration are discussed in the detailed specification mentioned in the first paragraph.

Specifications for special order or custom colors, technical evaluation of restoration for fiber cement tiles or other unique restoration problems will be handled on a priority basis.
